Key ideas

Semiconductors and Electronic Devices: what you must understand

  • n-type: donor impurity, electrons majority; p-type: acceptor, holes majority
  • Forward bias reduces the barrier; reverse bias increases it
  • A Zener diode in reverse breakdown regulates voltage
  • Logic gates: AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR and their truth tables
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Semiconductors and Electronic Devices

  • Full-wave rectifier output frequency = 2 × input frequency
  • Zener current I_Z = I_S − I_L

A JEE Advanced-level example on Semiconductors and Electronic Devices

Question. A Zener diode with breakdown voltage V_Z = 6V is used in a voltage regulator circuit. The input voltage varies from 10V to 16V, and a series resistance R = 200Ω is connected. The Zener has a maximum power rating of 0.5W. (a) Find the minimum load resistance R_L for which the Zener maintains voltage regulation. (b) If R_L = 1kΩ and input voltage is 14V, calculate the power dissipated in the Zener diode.

Show solution
  1. Current through series resistor: I = (V_in − V_Z)/R. At minimum input (10V): I = (10−6)/200 = 20 mA
  2. For Zener to regulate, Zener current I_Z must be positive. At minimum input, I_Z → 0 gives maximum load current I_L(max) = 20 mA
  3. Minimum load resistance: R_L(min) = V_Z/I_L(max) = 6V/20mA = 300Ω
  4. For part (b) at V_in = 14V: I = (14−6)/200 = 40 mA and I_L = 6V/1000Ω = 6 mA
  5. Zener current: I_Z = I − I_L = 40 − 6 = 34 mA
  6. Power in Zener: P_Z = V_Z × I_Z = 6 × 0.034 = 0.204 W = 204 mW

Answer: (a) R_L(min) = 300Ω; (b) P_Z = 204 mW

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
