JEE Advanced level

A JEE Advanced-level example on Experimental Skills (Physics Practicals)

Question. In a metre bridge experiment, a standard resistance S = 10 Ω is connected in the left gap and an unknown resistance X in the right gap. The balance point is at 40 cm from the left end. However, the bridge wire has non-uniform cross-section such that the resistance per unit length varies linearly from 0.5 Ω/cm at the left end to 1.5 Ω/cm at the right end. Find the true value of X.

Show solution
  1. Resistance per unit length at distance x from left: r(x) = 0.5 + 0.01x Ω/cm
  2. Resistance of left segment (0 to 40 cm): R₁ = ∫₀⁴⁰(0.5 + 0.01x)dx = [0.5x + 0.005x²]₀⁴⁰ = 20 + 8 = 28 Ω
  3. Resistance of right segment (40 to 100 cm): R₂ = ∫₄₀¹⁰⁰(0.5 + 0.01x)dx = 100 − 28 = 72 Ω
  4. At balance in Wheatstone bridge: S/X = R₁/R₂
  5. Solving: X = S × (R₂/R₁) = 10 × (72/28) = 180/7 Ω

Answer: X = 180/7 Ω ≈ 25.7 Ω

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
