Key ideas

Atoms and Nuclei: what you must understand

  • Bohr orbits: angular momentum = nh/2π
  • Spectral series: Lyman (UV), Balmer (visible), Paschen (IR)
  • Binding energy per nucleon peaks near iron
  • Radioactive decay is exponential

A JEE Advanced-level example on Atoms and Nuclei

Question. A ²³⁸U nucleus (Z=92) undergoes alpha decay, emitting an alpha particle with kinetic energy 4.2 MeV. (a) Find the recoil kinetic energy of the daughter nucleus. (b) The alpha particle later captures one electron to form a He⁺ ion. Calculate the wavelength of the photon emitted when this electron transitions from n=2 to n=1. (Given: mass of alpha particle = 4 u, mass of daughter nucleus = 234 u, R = 1.097 × 10⁷ m⁻¹, hc = 1240 eV·nm)

Show solution
  1. By momentum conservation in alpha decay: m_α v_α = M_d v_d, so the ratio of kinetic energies is KE_d/KE_α = m_α/M_d
  2. Recoil KE of daughter = 4.2 × (4/234) = 0.072 MeV = 72 keV
  3. For He⁺ ion (Z=2), energy released in n=2 to n=1 transition: ΔE = 13.6 × Z² × (1/1² − 1/2²) = 13.6 × 4 × 0.75 = 40.8 eV
  4. Wavelength λ = hc/ΔE = 1240/40.8 = 30.4 nm

Answer: (a) 72 keV (b) 30.4 nm

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
