Trigonometric ratios and identities, compound and multiple angles, trigonometric equations and their general solutions.

Key ideas

Trigonometry (Ratios, Identities, Equations): what you must understand

  • sin²x + cos²x = 1 is the base identity
  • Use ASTC to find signs by quadrant
  • General solution of sin x = sin α: x = nπ + (−1)ⁿα
  • Sum-to-product formulas simplify sums of sines
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Trigonometry (Ratios, Identities, Equations)

  • sin(A ± B) = sinA cosB ± cosA sinB
  • cos2A = 1 − 2sin²A = 2cos²A − 1
  • tan(A + B) = (tanA + tanB)/(1 − tanA tanB)
  • cos x = cos α → x = 2nπ ± α

JEE Advanced level

A JEE Advanced-level example on Trigonometry (Ratios, Identities, Equations)

Question. If sin(x) + sin(y) = a and cos(x) + cos(y) = b, find the value of tan((x+y)/2) in terms of a and b.

Show solution
  1. Apply sum-to-product formula: sin(x) + sin(y) = 2 sin((x+y)/2) cos((x-y)/2) = a
  2. Apply sum-to-product formula: cos(x) + cos(y) = 2 cos((x+y)/2) cos((x-y)/2) = b
  3. Divide the first equation by the second equation
  4. The cos((x-y)/2) terms cancel out, leaving sin((x+y)/2) / cos((x+y)/2) = a/b
  5. Therefore tan((x+y)/2) = a/b

Answer: tan((x+y)/2) = a/b

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
