Key ideas

Limits: what you must understand

  • Check the form first: 0/0, ∞/∞, 1^∞
  • 1^∞ form: limit = e^(lim (f − 1)g)
  • Use standard limits before L'Hôpital
  • Expansions (series) solve many limits quickly
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Limits

  • lim sin x / x = 1, lim (1 − cos x)/x² = ½
  • lim (eˣ − 1)/x = 1, lim ln(1 + x)/x = 1
  • lim (1 + x)^(1/x) = e
  • lim (aˣ − 1)/x = ln a

Avoid

Common mistakes students make

  • Using L'Hôpital when the form is not indeterminate
  • Forgetting degrees vs radians
  • Sign errors with left and right limits

How this topic is asked in JEE

Appears frequently. Series expansions of sin x, cos x, eˣ and ln(1 + x) to the x³ term save a lot of time.

A JEE Advanced-level example on Limits

Question. Evaluate lim(x→0) [(e^(sin x) - e^(tan x)) / x³]

Show solution
  1. Rewrite as e^(tan x) · [e^(sin x - tan x) - 1] / x³
  2. Use Taylor expansions: sin x = x - x³/6 + ... and tan x = x + x³/3 + ...
  3. So sin x - tan x = -x³/6 - x³/3 = -x³/2 (keeping terms up to x³)
  4. As x→0, e^(tan x) → 1 and using e^u - 1 ≈ u for small u, we get e^(sin x - tan x) - 1 ≈ sin x - tan x
  5. The limit becomes lim(x→0) (-x³/2) / x³ = -1/2

Answer: -1/2

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Limits important for JEE Main 2027?

Appears frequently. It is part of the official 'Limit, Continuity and Differentiability' unit in the JEE Main 2027 syllabus.

What are the most important formulas in Limits?

lim sin x / x = 1, lim (1 − cos x)/x² = ½; lim (eˣ − 1)/x = 1, lim ln(1 + x)/x = 1; lim (1 + x)^(1/x) = e.

How should I study Limits for JEE?

Understand the key ideas from NCERT or one full lecture, learn the formula sheet, then solve 25–30 past JEE questions on the topic. Series expansions of sin x, cos x, eˣ and ln(1 + x) to the x³ term save a lot of time.
