Direct answer

Continuity at a point, types of discontinuity, differentiability, derivatives of standard and composite functions, and implicit and parametric differentiation.

Continuity at a point, types of discontinuity, differentiability, derivatives of standard and composite functions, and implicit and parametric differentiation.

Key ideas

Continuity and Differentiability: what you must understand

  • Continuous at a: LHL = RHL = f(a)
  • Differentiable implies continuous, not the reverse
  • |x| is continuous but not differentiable at 0
  • Greatest integer function is discontinuous at integers
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Continuity and Differentiability

  • Chain rule: d/dx f(g(x)) = f′(g(x))g′(x)
  • Parametric: dy/dx = (dy/dt)/(dx/dt)
  • Logarithmic differentiation for xˣ type functions
  • d/dx (sin⁻¹x) = 1/√(1 − x²)

Avoid

Common mistakes students make

  • Checking only one side
  • Assuming continuity means differentiability
  • Wrong derivative of inverse trig functions

JEE Advanced level

A JEE Advanced-level example on Continuity and Differentiability

Question. Let f(x) = |x³ - x| for x ∈ [-1, 2]. Find the number of points in the interval where f(x) is not differentiable.

Show solution
  1. Factorize: |x³ - x| = |x(x - 1)(x + 1)|. The expression inside the modulus equals zero at x = -1, 0, 1.
  2. Determine sign in each interval: For x ∈ [-1, 0], x³ - x ≥ 0 so f(x) = x³ - x. For x ∈ [0, 1], x³ - x ≤ 0 so f(x) = x - x³. For x ∈ [1, 2], x³ - x ≥ 0 so f(x) = x³ - x.
  3. At x = 0: Left derivative = 3(0)² - 1 = -1. Right derivative = 1 - 3(0)² = 1. Since -1 ≠ 1, f is not differentiable at x = 0.
  4. At x = 1: Left derivative = 1 - 3(1)² = -2. Right derivative = 3(1)² - 1 = 2. Since -2 ≠ 2, f is not differentiable at x = 1.
  5. At x = -1: This is an endpoint of the domain, so we only need one sided differentiability which exists. Not counted as a point of non-differentiability.

Answer: 2

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
