Key ideas

Indefinite Integration: what you must understand

  • Integration is the reverse of differentiation
  • Choose substitution when the derivative of a part is present
  • By parts: ILATE order to pick u
  • Partial fractions for rational functions
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Indefinite Integration

  • ∫xⁿ dx = xⁿ⁺¹/(n+1) + C
  • ∫u v dx = u∫v dx − ∫(u′∫v dx) dx
  • ∫dx/(x² + a²) = (1/a) tan⁻¹(x/a) + C
  • ∫eˣ[f(x) + f′(x)] dx = eˣf(x) + C

A JEE Advanced-level example on Indefinite Integration

Question. Evaluate ∫ (x² + 1) / (x⁴ + 1) dx

Show solution
  1. Divide both numerator and denominator by x² to get ∫ (1 + 1/x²) / (x² + 1/x²) dx
  2. Rewrite the denominator: x² + 1/x² = (x − 1/x)² + 2
  3. Substitute t = x − 1/x, so dt = (1 + 1/x²) dx
  4. The integral becomes ∫ dt / (t² + 2) which is a standard form
  5. Apply the formula ∫ dt/(t² + a²) = (1/a) tan⁻¹(t/a) + C with a = √2
  6. Substitute back t = x − 1/x to get the final answer

Answer: (1/√2) tan⁻¹[(x² − 1)/(√2 · x)] + C

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
