Key ideas

p-Block Elements: what you must understand

  • Inert pair effect: lower oxidation states become stable down the group
  • Oxoacid acidity rises with oxidation state of the central atom
  • Structures of XeF₂, XeF₄, XeF₆ follow VSEPR
  • Diborane has 3-centre–2-electron bonds
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for p-Block Elements

  • Oxoacids of P: H₃PO₂ (monobasic), H₃PO₃ (dibasic), H₃PO₄ (tribasic)
  • Bond angle order: NH₃ > PH₃ > AsH₃
  • Acidity of hydrogen halides: HI > HBr > HCl > HF
  • Thermal stability of hydrides decreases down a group

Avoid

Common mistakes students make

  • Counting P–H bonds as acidic hydrogens
  • Wrong structures of interhalogens
  • Ignoring NCERT exceptions

How this topic is asked in JEE

Appears in almost every JEE Main shift. Very high frequency and NCERT-based. Read the NCERT chapter twice and make a structures sheet.

Prerequisites: Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure.

A JEE Advanced-level example on p-Block Elements

Question. Consider the following statements about p-block elements and their compounds: (I) XeF₄ has a square planar geometry with two lone pairs on Xe in axial positions (II) In XeO₃, xenon is sp³ hybridized with one lone pair, giving a trigonal pyramidal shape (III) The inert pair effect explains why Tl⁺ is more stable than Tl³⁺ (IV) BF₃ is a stronger Lewis acid than BCl₃ because back bonding is more effective in BCl₃ How many of the above statements are correct?

Show solution
  1. Statement I: XeF₄ has 4 bond pairs + 2 lone pairs = 6 electron domains. Hybridization is sp³d². Lone pairs occupy axial positions to minimize repulsion, giving square planar shape. CORRECT
  2. Statement II: XeO₃ has 3 Xe=O bonds + 1 lone pair = 4 electron domains. Hybridization is sp³. Shape is trigonal pyramidal (similar to NH₃). CORRECT
  3. Statement III: Inert pair effect means 6s² electrons in Tl are reluctant to bond due to poor shielding by inner d and f orbitals. So Tl⁺ (keeps 6s²) is more stable than Tl³⁺. CORRECT
  4. Statement IV: Back bonding (pπ-pπ) is actually MORE effective in BF₃ because F(2p) and B(2p) orbitals have similar sizes. This makes BF₃ a WEAKER Lewis acid than BCl₃. INCORRECT
  5. Count: Statements I, II, and III are correct. Statement IV has the reasoning backwards.

Answer: 3

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
