Direct answer

Nucleophilic addition, aldol and Cannizzaro reactions, oxidation and reduction, and tests for aldehydes and ketones.

Nucleophilic addition, aldol and Cannizzaro reactions, oxidation and reduction, and tests for aldehydes and ketones.

Key ideas

Aldehydes and Ketones: what you must understand

  • Aldehydes are more reactive than ketones to nucleophiles
  • Aldol needs α-hydrogen; Cannizzaro needs no α-hydrogen
  • Tollens' and Fehling's tests detect aldehydes
  • Iodoform test detects CH₃CO– and CH₃CH(OH)–
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Aldehydes and Ketones

  • Clemmensen: C=O → CH₂ (Zn-Hg/HCl)
  • Wolff–Kishner: C=O → CH₂ (N₂H₄/KOH)
  • Cannizzaro: 2 HCHO → HCOO⁻ + CH₃OH
  • Aldol: 2 CH₃CHO → CH₃CH(OH)CH₂CHO

JEE Advanced level

A JEE Advanced-level example on Aldehydes and Ketones

Question. Compound X (molecular formula C₈H₈O) gives a positive iodoform test but does not reduce Tollens' reagent. When X is treated with benzaldehyde in dilute NaOH, compound Y (C₁₅H₁₂O) is formed. However, benzaldehyde alone when treated with concentrated NaOH gives an equimolar mixture of P and Q. (a) Identify X and Y. (b) Identify P and Q and name the reaction. (c) Explain why X does not undergo the same reaction as benzaldehyde with concentrated NaOH.

Show solution
  1. Positive iodoform test means X has a CH₃CO− group (methyl ketone). Negative Tollens' test confirms X is not an aldehyde. With formula C₈H₈O, X must be acetophenone (C₆H₅COCH₃).
  2. X reacts with benzaldehyde via crossed aldol condensation. The enolate of acetophenone attacks the carbonyl carbon of benzaldehyde, followed by dehydration to give Y = benzalacetophenone or chalcone (C₆H₅CH=CHCOC₆H₅).
  3. Benzaldehyde has no α-hydrogens, so it cannot undergo aldol condensation. With concentrated NaOH, it undergoes Cannizzaro reaction (disproportionation).
  4. In Cannizzaro reaction: 2C₆H₅CHO + NaOH → C₆H₅COO⁻Na⁺ + C₆H₅CH₂OH. One molecule is oxidized to sodium benzoate (P) and one is reduced to benzyl alcohol (Q).
  5. Acetophenone has α-hydrogens on the methyl group, so it prefers aldol condensation over Cannizzaro reaction. Cannizzaro reaction is specific to aldehydes without α-hydrogens.

Answer: (a) X = Acetophenone (C₆H₅COCH₃), Y = Benzalacetophenone/Chalcone (C₆H₅CH=CHCOC₆H₅). (b) P = Sodium benzoate, Q = Benzyl alcohol; Cannizzaro reaction. (c) Acetophenone has α-hydrogens so it undergoes aldol condensation instead of Cannizzaro reaction.

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
