Two point charges $8$ $\mu$C and $-2$ $\mu$C are located at $x = 2$ cm and $x = 4$ cm, respectively on the $x$-axis. The ratio of electric flux due to these charges through two spheres of radii $3$ cm and $5$ cm with their centers at the origin is __________.

  1. (1) $4:1$
  2. (2) $3:4$
  3. (3) $4:3$
  4. (4) $4:5$
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (3)

Key idea: Gauss's Law - Electric flux depends only on enclosed charge

  1. Apply Gauss's Law: Electric flux $\Phi = \frac{q_{\text{enclosed}}}{\epsilon_0}$
  2. For sphere of radius $3$ cm: Check which charges are inside. Charge at $x=2$ cm is inside (distance $2 < 3$), charge at $x=4$ cm is outside (distance $4 > 3$)
  3. Enclosed charge in sphere 1: $q_1 = 8$ μC, so $\Phi_1 = \frac{8 \mu C}{\epsilon_0}$
  4. For sphere of radius $5$ cm: Both charges are inside (distances $2 < 5$ and $4 < 5$)
  5. Enclosed charge in sphere 2: $q_1 + q_2 = 8 + (-2) = 6$ μC, so $\Phi_2 = \frac{6 \mu C}{\epsilon_0}$
  6. Ratio of fluxes: $\frac{\Phi_1}{\Phi_2} = \frac{8}{6} = \frac{4}{3}$, which is $4:3$

A thin half ring of radius 35 cm is uniformly charged with a total charge of $Q$ coulomb. If the magnitude of the electric field at centre of the half ring is 100 V/m, then the value of $Q$ is ______ nC. ($\epsilon_0 = 8.85 \times 10^{-12}$ C$^2$/Nm$^2$ and $\pi = 3.14$)

  1. (1) 2.14
  2. (2) 2.44
  3. (3) 3.25
  4. (4) 0.7
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (1)

Key idea: Electric field at the center of a uniformly charged half ring

  1. For a uniformly charged half ring, linear charge density $\lambda = \frac{Q}{\pi R}$ where $R = 0.35$ m
  2. Consider element $dq = \lambda R d\theta = \frac{Q}{\pi}d\theta$ at angle $\theta$. Electric field $dE = \frac{k dq}{R^2}$
  3. By symmetry, horizontal components cancel. Vertical components: $E = \int_0^\pi \frac{kQ}{\pi R^2}\sin\theta\, d\theta$
  4. Evaluating: $E = \frac{kQ}{\pi R^2} \times 2 = \frac{Q}{2\pi^2\epsilon_0 R^2}$ (using $k = \frac{1}{4\pi\epsilon_0}$)
  5. Solving for $Q$: $Q = 2\pi^2\epsilon_0 R^2 E = 2 \times (3.14)^2 \times 8.85 \times 10^{-12} \times (0.35)^2 \times 100$
  6. Calculate: $Q = 2 \times 9.8596 \times 8.85 \times 10^{-12} \times 0.1225 \times 100 = 2.14 \times 10^{-9}$ C
  7. Therefore, $Q = 2.14$ nC

A three coulomb charge moves from the point $(0, -2, -5)$ to the point $(5, 1, 2)$ in an electric field expressed as $\vec{E} = 2x\hat{i} + 3y^{2}\hat{j} + 4\hat{k}$ N/C. The work done in moving the charge is ______J.

Show answer and solution

Answer: 186

Key idea: Work done by electric field on a moving charge in a conservative field

  1. Work done is $W = q \int_A^B \vec{E} \cdot d\vec{r}$ where $q = 3$ C
  2. Check that $\nabla \times \vec{E} = 0$, confirming the field is conservative (path-independent)
  3. Write $\vec{E} \cdot d\vec{r} = 2x dx + 3y^2 dy + 4 dz$ and integrate each component separately
  4. Calculate: $\int_0^5 2x dx = [x^2]_0^5 = 25$, $\int_{-2}^1 3y^2 dy = [y^3]_{-2}^1 = 9$, $\int_{-5}^2 4 dz = [4z]_{-5}^2 = 28$
  5. Sum the integrals: $25 + 9 + 28 = 62$
  6. Multiply by charge: $W = 3 \times 62 = 186$ J

  2. (2) $\left(20\hat{i}-30\hat{j}\right)$
  3. (3) $\left(20\hat{i}+45\hat{j}\right)$
  4. (4) $\left(-4\hat{i}+6\hat{j}\right)$
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (1)

Key idea: Relation between Electric Field and Electric Potential

  1. Given: $V = 5(x^2 - y^2)$ V. Use the relation $\vec{E} = -\nabla V = -\left(\frac{\partial V}{\partial x}\hat{i} + \frac{\partial V}{\partial y}\hat{j}\right)$
  2. Calculate partial derivatives: $\frac{\partial V}{\partial x} = 5(2x) = 10x$ and $\frac{\partial V}{\partial y} = 5(-2y) = -10y$
  3. Write electric field: $\vec{E} = -10x\hat{i} + 10y\hat{j}$ V/m
  4. Substitute point $(2, 3)$: $\vec{E} = -10(2)\hat{i} + 10(3)\hat{j}$
  5. Final result: $\vec{E} = (-20\hat{i} + 30\hat{j})$ V/m
