Is 99 Percentile Enough for a Good NIT?

99 percentile is a great score. Whether it is “enough” depends on the branch, the NIT and your quota.

Direct answer

99 percentile is roughly a Common Rank of about 13,000–15,000 with 13–14 lakh candidates.

That usually means good branches at many NITs under home state quota, and core or circuit branches at mid-level NITs under other state quota. CSE at the top NITs usually needs a higher percentile for General candidates.

Rank

What 99 percentile means

Rank ≈ (100 − 99) ÷ 100 × candidates. With 13.5 lakh candidates, that is about 13,500. Your category rank will be a much smaller number if you are OBC-NCL, EWS, SC or ST.

Options

What is usually realistic (General, approximate)

QuotaUsually realistic at ~13,500 CRL
Home state quotaGood branches at your state's NIT; CSE possible at several NITs
Other state quotaECE, EE, Mechanical at mid-level NITs; CSE at newer NITs and many IIITs
Top NIT CSE (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal)Usually needs a higher percentile

These come from recent JoSAA closing ranks and shift every year. Check exact numbers in the cutoff database and college predictor.

Session 2?

Should you write Session 2 after 99 in Session 1?

If you are aiming for JEE Advanced, spend most of your time on Advanced. If NIT CSE is the goal, a few marks more in April can move your rank by thousands at this level, so it can be worth writing.
