What Is the NTA Score in JEE Main?

Your JEE Main result is not your marks. It is a percentile, calculated inside your own shift. Here is how it works, with a small example.

Last updated: 26 October 2026

Direct answer

Your NTA score is your percentile: the percentage of candidates in your shift who scored the same as you or less.

The topper of every shift gets 100. Percentiles are calculated to 7 decimal places to reduce ties. Your rank comes from the better of your two total NTA scores across Session 1 and Session 2.

The formula

How the percentile is calculated

NTA uses this formula for every shift separately:

Percentile = 100 × (number of candidates in your shift with a raw score equal to or less than yours) ÷ (total candidates who appeared in your shift)

Your total percentile is calculated from your total marks. It is not the average of your three subject percentiles.

Small example

A worked example

Say 40,000 students wrote your shift. You scored 120 marks, and 36,800 students in your shift scored 120 or less.

Percentile = 100 × 36,800 ÷ 40,000 = 92.

If your friend in a harder shift also scored 120, more students there may be at or below 120, so she could get a higher percentile than you for the same marks. That is the point of normalisation: a hard shift does not punish you.

Two sessions

What happens if you write both sessions

NTA takes the best of your two total NTA scores. It does not mix your Physics from one session with your Maths from the other. One weak session can never pull your rank down.

Same score?

How JEE Main breaks ties

  1. Higher NTA score in Mathematics
  2. Then higher NTA score in Physics
  3. Then higher NTA score in Chemistry
  4. Then fewer wrong answers relative to correct answers across all subjects
  5. Then the same ratio in Maths, then Physics, then Chemistry
  6. If still tied, the same rank

So two habits help even in ties: stronger Maths and fewer careless wrong answers.

Common confusion

Percentile is not percentage

95 percentile does not mean you scored 95% of 300. It means you did as well as or better than 95% of your shift. In recent sessions, about 95 percentile has usually needed roughly 115–130 marks out of 300, depending on the shift.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is NTA score in JEE Main?

It is your percentile: the percentage of candidates in your shift who scored equal to or less than you, calculated to 7 decimal places.

Is percentile the same as percentage in JEE Main?

No. Percentile compares you with others in your shift. Percentage is your marks out of 300.

How is JEE Main rank decided if I write both sessions?

The better of your two total NTA scores is used. Subject scores from the two sessions are not mixed.

How are ties broken in JEE Main 2027?

By Maths NTA score, then Physics, then Chemistry, then the ratio of wrong to correct answers overall and in each subject. If still tied, the same rank is given.

Does a tough shift lower my percentile?

Not by itself. Percentile is calculated within your shift, so if everyone found it tough, the same marks give a higher percentile.
