Can I Give JEE Without Maths (or With PCB)?

Writing the exam and getting admission have different rules. This is where most students get confused.

Last updated: 26 October 2026

Direct answer

NTA has no subject condition for writing JEE Main, but B.Tech admission at NITs and IITs needs Maths and Physics in Class 12.

So a PCB student can write JEE Main, but cannot get a B.Tech seat through JoSAA. JEE Advanced needs Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 12. Rules below follow recent JoSAA business rules and the JEE Advanced brochure; check the 2027 versions.

Quick answer

Which subjects you need for what

GoalClass 12 subjects needed
Write JEE Main Paper 1No subject condition in the NTA bulletin
B.Tech at NIT, IIIT, CFTI (JoSAA)Physics and Maths compulsory, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject
Write JEE Advanced / IIT admissionPhysics, Chemistry and Maths, all compulsory
B.Arch (JEE Main Paper 2A)Physics, Chemistry and Maths, as per architecture admission rules
Your case

Common situations

  • PCB student: you can write JEE Main, but no JoSAA B.Tech seat. Look at NEET, B.Sc, or state and private colleges with their own rules.
  • PCM minus Chemistry (PM + Computer Science): NIT, IIIT B.Tech is possible; IITs are not, because JEE Advanced needs Chemistry.
  • PCMB: you are fine for everything.
  • Want to add Maths later: passing Maths in a later year does not change your first passing year (see the bulletin example).
Skipping a subject in the exam

Can I skip Chemistry or Physics in the paper?

You can leave questions unanswered, but all 75 questions are from all three subjects, and Maths is the first tie-breaker. Skipping a whole subject throws away up to 100 marks. Even 30–40 marks from your weakest subject usually decides your rank.
