The allotment algorithm walks down your preference list and gives you the first choice that your rank can still secure. That single rule produces three consequences students discover too late. First, a choice placed above a better-for-you option can actively take you to the worse outcome. Second, adding more choices never hurts you, so a short list is only a self-imposed restriction. Third, freezing early is a decision, not a formality, because upgrade rounds only move you upward within the same order. This simulator makes that order visible before it becomes irreversible.

2. Sort by what you actually want, not by prestige alone
Step 2If you want CSE more than you want a particular campus, CSE entries move up. JoSAA respects your order literally, so there is no clever trick that beats being honest in the list.
3. Keep one or two aspirational entries at the very top
Step 3A Dream entry at position one costs you nothing, because if your rank does not reach it the algorithm simply moves to position two. What it does need is a real Target and Safe section below it.
4. Verify the quota flag for every choice
Step 4Home-state, other-state and female-only pools have different closing ranks. A choice entered under the wrong quota is a list entry that will never allot.
5. Copy the order into the official portal
Step 5Use the copy button, then paste and re-check inside the JoSAA portal before the locking deadline. Keep a screenshot of the final order for your own record.

How to read the numbers honestly
Upgrade rounds only move you up
In later rounds the system can move you from a lower choice to a higher one in the same list, but never downward. That is why the first position should hold the option you want most, not the one you think is safest.
More choices never reduce your chances
There is no penalty for a long list. Students who submit ten choices and then find a cutoff shift usually regret it; students with fifty choices almost never do.
Eligibility is checked after allotment
A seat can be withdrawn if category, home-state or gender certificates do not match the claim. Fix the paperwork before the first allotment, not after.

How many choices should I fill in JoSAA?
Fill as many as you would accept. There is no penalty for a long list, and a longer list is your only protection against a cutoff shift you did not predict.
Does the order of choices matter in JoSAA?
Yes, it is the single most important thing you control. Allotment gives you the highest-placed choice your rank can still secure, so a badly ordered list can hand you a worse outcome than a better-ordered one.
Should I put the best college first or the safest last?
Put the options you want most at the top and the safer ones below. The algorithm descends the list, so the bottom is where you want your guarantees, not your ambitions.
What is freeze, float and slide?
Freeze means you accept the current seat and stop. Float means you keep the seat but stay in the running for any higher choice. Slide means you stay in the running only for better branches within the same institute.
Can I change my list after locking?
The window for adding or reordering choices closes at the published deadline for that round. After the final lock you cannot insert a new choice, so finish the list before the last day, not on it.
What happens if no choice is allotted?
You stay in the counselling process for later rounds and remain eligible for CSAB special rounds, which fill seats left vacant after JoSAA concludes.
