At IIT level, branch choice costs you more rank than college choice
The gap between CSE and Chemical Engineering at the same IIT is often larger than the gap between two different IITs for the same branch. A rank that cannot touch CSE at IIT Bombay may comfortably reach CSE at a newer IIT, or Electrical at a mid-tier IIT. That is why the useful question is never "which IIT can I get" but "which institute and branch pairs open at my rank". This selector computes exactly that from published closing ranks, and bands each pair so you know which ones are safe to place high and which are only worth one aspirational slot.

2. Look at the branches, not just the institutes
Step 2The table is sorted by how late the branch closed. A branch appearing in your Safe band at a newer IIT is a genuinely better outcome than a Dream entry you will never get.
3. Pick two or three real targets
Step 3Students routinely over-fill the top of the preference list with unreachable IIT CSE and then panic. Keep a maximum of two Dream entries, then move straight into Target and Safe.
4. Check the dual-degree and newer-IIT options
Step 4Newer IITs and interdisciplinary programmes often close much later than the flagship branch at the same institute. If your goal is an IIT tag plus a strong branch, this is where the value sits.

How to read the numbers honestly
Advanced ranks do not mix with Main ranks
IIT seats are allotted on JEE Advanced ranks, and NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats on JEE Main ranks. Never compare an Advanced rank against a Main closing rank.
Closing ranks are the final round
The published closing rank is normally the Round-6 figure, which is the most competitive point. Earlier rounds can allot at a later rank because seats are still filling.
Reserved categories use category ranks
For OBC-NCL, SC and ST candidates the comparison is against a category rank, not a Common Rank List position. The tool handles the conversion and labels it clearly.

What JEE Advanced rank is needed for IIT CSE?
In recent years, CSE at the oldest IITs closed within the first few hundred Common Rank List positions, while newer IITs closed several thousand positions later. Always check the current closing band rather than a remembered number.
Are JoSAA cut-offs for IITs based on JEE Main rank?
No. IIT seats are allotted on JEE Advanced rank. NITs, IIITs and GFTIs use JEE Main rank. Both are allotted through the same JoSAA portal, which is where the confusion starts.
Should I take a lower branch at an old IIT or CSE at a new IIT?
There is no universal right answer, and anyone who gives you one is guessing about your future. Decide using the actual branch curriculum, the placement data you can verify, and whether you want to work in that field for the next decade.
Can I get an IIT with a five-digit Advanced rank?
Generally no for B.Tech programmes, because the total IIT seat pool is smaller than that. Five-digit ranks usually mean planning around NIT and IIIT options instead.
Does gender affect IIT branch closing ranks?
Yes. Female-only supernumerary seats create a separate, typically looser band at many institutes. Check the female-only closing rank if you are eligible for it.
