How JoSAA choice filling works
You fill a list of college+branch combinations in order of preference. JoSAA algorithm allots you the highest preference choice where your rank qualifies.
Key rule: Always put your most preferred choice first, even if you think you will not get it. There is no penalty for dreaming.
How to order your choices
- 1-30: Dream choices (reach, but possible)
- 31-60: Probable choices (realistic based on cutoffs)
- 61-100: Safe choices (should definitely get)
- 101+: Backup choices (worst case scenario)
Analyze previous year cutoffs but add 10-15% margin for safety.
How many choices should you fill
Fill 100+ choices minimum. There is no limit and no penalty.
Students who fill fewer choices often regret when cutoffs shift. Include choices you would accept even if not ideal — you can always reject later.
Common choice filling mistakes
- Ordering by expected cutoff instead of preference
- Filling only 20-30 choices (too risky)
- Not including safe backup options
- Forgetting to lock choices before deadline
- Not considering home state quota for NITs
Frequently asked questions
Should I fill choices I do not want?
Fill choices you would accept if nothing else works. You can reject allotment later, but having options is better.
What is Freeze, Float, Slide in JoSAA?
After allotment: Freeze = keep this seat, Float = keep but try for better college same branch, Slide = keep but try for better branch same college.
Can I change choices after submission?
Yes, until the choice locking deadline. After locking, no changes allowed for that round.
