Key ideas

Ray Optics and Optical Instruments: what you must understand

  • Use one sign convention throughout (Cartesian is standard)
  • TIR happens when light goes from denser to rarer and i > critical angle
  • Lens power adds for thin lenses in contact
  • Minimum deviation in a prism means the ray passes symmetrically
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Ray Optics and Optical Instruments

  • Mirror: 1/v + 1/u = 1/f; lens: 1/v − 1/u = 1/f
  • Lens maker: 1/f = (μ − 1)(1/R₁ − 1/R₂)
  • sin C = 1/μ
  • Prism: μ = sin((A + δ_m)/2) / sin(A/2)

Avoid

Common mistakes students make

  • Mixing the mirror and lens formulas
  • Sign errors with u and R
  • Forgetting that f changes when a lens is placed in water

JEE Advanced level

A JEE Advanced-level example on Ray Optics and Optical Instruments

Question. A compound microscope has an objective made of two thin convex lenses of focal lengths 1 cm and 2 cm placed in contact. The eyepiece has a focal length of 5 cm. The distance between the objective combination and the eyepiece is 20 cm. If the final image is formed at infinity, find (a) the distance of the object from the objective, and (b) the magnifying power of the microscope. Take the least distance of distinct vision as 25 cm.

Show solution
  1. Equivalent focal length of objective: 1/f = 1/f₁ + 1/f₂ = 1/1 + 1/2 = 3/2, so f = 2/3 cm
  2. For final image at infinity, intermediate image must be at focus of eyepiece. So image distance from objective v = 20 − 5 = 15 cm
  3. Using lens formula 1/v − 1/u = 1/f: 1/15 − 1/u = 3/2, giving 1/u = 1/15 − 3/2 = −43/30, so u = −30/43 cm
  4. Object distance from objective = 30/43 cm ≈ 0.70 cm
  5. Magnification by objective m₀ = v/|u| = 15 × 43/30 = 21.5
  6. Magnifying power M = m₀ × (D/fₑ) = 21.5 × (25/5) = 107.5

Answer: (a) Object distance = 30/43 cm ≈ 0.70 cm; (b) Magnifying power = 107.5

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
