Key ideas

Alternating Current: what you must understand

  • In a pure inductor current lags voltage by 90°; in a capacitor it leads by 90°
  • At resonance X_L = X_C and impedance is minimum
  • Average power uses the power factor cosφ
  • An ideal transformer conserves power
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Alternating Current

  • V_rms = V₀/√2
  • X_L = ωL, X_C = 1/ωC, Z = √(R² + (X_L − X_C)²)
  • Resonance ω₀ = 1/√(LC); Q = ω₀L/R
  • P_avg = V_rms I_rms cosφ

Avoid

Common mistakes students make

  • Adding R, X_L and X_C directly
  • Using peak instead of RMS values for power
  • Forgetting the power factor is R/Z

A JEE Advanced-level example on Alternating Current

Question. A series LCR circuit has L = 0.4 H, C = 100 μF, and R = 30 Ω connected to a 200 V (RMS) AC source with variable frequency. (a) Find the resonant angular frequency. (b) At resonance, find the RMS current and voltage across the inductor. (c) Calculate the quality factor Q. (d) When the angular frequency is changed to 100 rad/s, find the impedance, current, power factor, and average power dissipated.

Show solution
  1. Resonant frequency: ω₀ = 1/√(LC) = 1/√(0.4 × 10⁻⁴) = 158 rad/s
  2. At resonance, Z = R = 30 Ω, so I₀ = V/R = 200/30 = 6.67 A. Voltage across inductor V_L = I₀ × ω₀L = 6.67 × 158 × 0.4 = 421 V
  3. Quality factor Q = ω₀L/R = (158 × 0.4)/30 = 2.1
  4. At ω = 100 rad/s: X_L = 40 Ω, X_C = 100 Ω. Impedance Z = √(R² + (X_L − X_C)²) = √(900 + 3600) = 67.1 Ω
  5. Current I = 200/67.1 = 2.98 A. Power factor cos φ = R/Z = 30/67.1 = 0.447
  6. Average power P = I²R = (2.98)² × 30 = 266 W

Answer: (a) ω₀ = 158 rad/s (b) I₀ = 6.67 A, V_L = 421 V (c) Q = 2.1 (d) Z = 67.1 Ω, I = 2.98 A, cos φ = 0.447, P = 266 W

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
