Matrix algebra, special matrices, determinants and their properties, adjoint and inverse, and solving linear systems.

Key ideas

Matrices and Determinants: what you must understand

  • AB ≠ BA in general
  • |kA| = kⁿ|A| for an n×n matrix
  • A⁻¹ exists only if |A| ≠ 0
  • System AX = B: |A| ≠ 0 gives a unique solution
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Matrices and Determinants

  • A⁻¹ = adj(A)/|A|
  • |adj A| = |A|^(n−1)
  • |AB| = |A||B|, (AB)⁻¹ = B⁻¹A⁻¹
  • Area of triangle = ½|det[x y 1]|

Avoid

Common mistakes students make

  • Using |kA| = k|A|
  • Wrong order in (AB)ᵀ = BᵀAᵀ
  • Missing the infinite-solution vs no-solution case

A JEE Advanced-level example on Matrices and Determinants

Question. Let A be a 3×3 matrix satisfying A² = 3A - 2I, where I is the identity matrix. If det(A) = 4, find the value of det(A³ - 2A² + A).

Show solution
  1. From A² = 3A - 2I, compute A³ = A·A² = A(3A - 2I) = 3A² - 2A = 3(3A - 2I) - 2A = 7A - 6I
  2. Substitute into B = A³ - 2A² + A: B = (7A - 6I) - 2(3A - 2I) + A = 7A - 6I - 6A + 4I + A = 2A - 2I = 2(A - I)
  3. So det(B) = det(2(A - I)) = 2³ × det(A - I) = 8 × det(A - I)
  4. From A² - 3A + 2I = 0, eigenvalues satisfy λ² - 3λ + 2 = 0, giving λ = 1 or λ = 2
  5. Since det(A) = 4 = product of eigenvalues, the eigenvalues must be 1, 2, 2. So eigenvalues of (A - I) are 0, 1, 1
  6. det(A - I) = 0 × 1 × 1 = 0, therefore det(B) = 8 × 0 = 0

Answer: 0

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
