Key ideas

Complex Numbers: what you must understand

  • |z|² = z z̄
  • arg(z₁z₂) = arg z₁ + arg z₂
  • Cube roots of unity: 1 + ω + ω² = 0, ω³ = 1
  • |z − z₀| = r is a circle
Formula sheet

Must-know formulas for Complex Numbers

  • z = r(cosθ + i sinθ) = re^(iθ)
  • De Moivre: (cosθ + i sinθ)ⁿ = cos nθ + i sin nθ
  • Triangle inequality: |z₁ + z₂| ≤ |z₁| + |z₂|
  • |z − z₁| = |z − z₂| is the perpendicular bisector

A JEE Advanced-level example on Complex Numbers

Question. Let z be a non-zero complex number satisfying |z - 1| + |z + 1| = 4. If arg(z) = π/3, find the value of |z|².

Show solution
  1. The equation |z - 1| + |z + 1| = 4 represents an ellipse with foci at (1, 0) and (-1, 0). Here 2a = 4 so a = 2, and 2c = 2 so c = 1. This gives b² = a² - c² = 3.
  2. The ellipse equation is x²/4 + y²/3 = 1.
  3. Since arg(z) = π/3, we can write z = r(cos π/3 + i sin π/3) = r/2 + i(r√3)/2 for some r > 0. So x = r/2 and y = (r√3)/2.
  4. Substituting into the ellipse equation: (r/2)²/4 + ((r√3)/2)²/3 = 1. This simplifies to r²/16 + r²/4 = 1, giving 5r²/16 = 1.
  5. Solving gives r² = 16/5. Since |z| = r, we get |z|² = 16/5.

Answer: 16/5

This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
