A JEE Advanced-level example on Principles Related to Practical Chemistry
Question. A hydrated salt (A) of a divalent metal shows the following: (i) Violet color in borax bead test in both oxidizing and reducing flames. (ii) White precipitate with BaCl₂ solution that is insoluble in concentrated HCl. (iii) On strong heating, it decomposes to give a residue (B) and gaseous oxides of sulfur. (iv) 2.77 g of (A) on complete thermal decomposition gives 0.71 g of residue (B). Identify salt (A) and find the number of water molecules of crystallization.
Show solution
- Violet borax bead in both flames indicates Mn²⁺ cation
- White ppt with BaCl₂ insoluble in conc. HCl confirms SO₄²⁻ anion, so salt is MnSO₄·xH₂O
- Thermal decomposition: MnSO₄·xH₂O → MnO + SO₃ + xH₂O, residue (B) is MnO (molar mass = 71 g/mol)
- Moles of MnO = 0.71/71 = 0.01 mol, so moles of salt = 0.01 mol
- Molar mass of salt = 2.77/0.01 = 277 g/mol. Since MnSO₄ = 151 g/mol, mass of water = 277 − 151 = 126 g/mol
- Number of water molecules x = 126/18 = 7
Answer: Salt (A) is MnSO₄·7H₂O (manganese sulfate heptahydrate) with 7 water molecules of crystallization
This example was solved twice independently and both solutions agree.
