  2. (2) 0.5
  3. (3) 0.7
  4. (4) 0.3
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (1)

Key idea: Circular motion with friction - vertical cylinder rotation

  1. Identify forces: Normal force $N$ (toward center), weight $mg$ (downward), friction $f$ (upward)
  2. For circular motion, centripetal force: $N = m\omega^2 r = 0.5 \times 25 \times 4 = 50$ N
  3. For mass not to fall, friction must balance weight: $f = mg = 0.5 \times 10 = 5$ N
  4. At minimum speed, friction is maximum: $f_{max} = \mu N$
  5. Solve for coefficient of friction: $\mu = \frac{mg}{N} = \frac{5}{50} = 0.1$

  2. (2) 2020
  3. (3) 2000
  4. (4) 1000
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (2)

Key idea: Work-Energy Theorem and Newton's Laws

  1. Find velocity just before hitting sand: $v^2 = 2gh = 2(10)(10) = 200$ m²/s², so $v = 10\sqrt{2}$ m/s

The time taken by a block of mass $m$ to slide down from the highest point to the lowest point on a rough inclined plane is 50 % more compared to the time taken by the same block on identical inclined smooth plane. Both inclined planes are at 45° with the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the rough inclined surface and block is ______.

  1. (1) $3/4$
  2. (2) $2/3$
  3. (3) $5/9$
  4. (4) $4/9$
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (3)

Key idea: Motion on inclined plane with friction; relating time of descent to coefficient of kinetic friction

  1. For smooth plane: acceleration $a_s = g\sin 45° = \frac{g}{\sqrt{2}}$, and using $s = \frac{1}{2}a_s t_s^2$
  2. For rough plane: acceleration $a_r = g\sin 45° - \mu_k g\cos 45° = \frac{g}{\sqrt{2}}(1 - \mu_k)$
  3. Using $s = \frac{1}{2}a_r t_r^2$ for the same distance $s$
  4. Given $t_r = 1.5 t_s$, so $t_r^2 = 2.25 t_s^2$
  5. Since $s$ is same: $\frac{t_r^2}{t_s^2} = \frac{a_s}{a_r}$, giving $2.25 = \frac{1}{1-\mu_k}$
  6. Solving: $1 - \mu_k = \frac{4}{9}$, therefore $\mu_k = \frac{5}{9}$

Show answer and solution

Answer: 75

Key idea: Motion on inclined plane with and without friction, kinematic equations

  1. For motion with friction: acceleration $a_1 = g\sin 45° - \mu g\cos 45° = \frac{g}{\sqrt{2}}(1-\mu)$
  2. Distance traveled: $s = \frac{1}{2}a_1 t^2 = \frac{1}{2} \cdot \frac{g}{\sqrt{2}}(1-\mu) \cdot t^2$
  3. For frictionless motion: acceleration $a_2 = g\sin 45° = \frac{g}{\sqrt{2}}$
  4. Distance traveled: $s = \frac{1}{2}a_2 \left(\frac{t}{2}\right)^2 = \frac{1}{2} \cdot \frac{g}{\sqrt{2}} \cdot \frac{t^2}{4}$
  5. Equating distances: $\frac{1}{2}(1-\mu) = \frac{1}{8}$, which gives $\mu = \frac{3}{4}$
  6. Since $\mu = \frac{\alpha}{100}$, we get $\alpha = 75$

Show answer and solution

Answer: 9

Key idea: Kinematics and Momentum

  1. Use the formula for distance in $n^{th}$ second: $s_n = u + a(n - \frac{1}{2})$ to find accelerations
  2. For mass 1: $104 = 5 + a_1(4.5) \Rightarrow a_1 = 22$ m/s²
  3. For mass 2: $129 = 12 + a_2(4.5) \Rightarrow a_2 = 26$ m/s²
  4. Find velocities after 10 s: $v_1 = 5 + 22(10) = 225$ m/s and $v_2 = 12 + 26(10) = 272$ m/s
  5. Calculate momenta: $p_1 = 3.4 \times 225 = 765$ kg·m/s and $p_2 = 2.5 \times 272 = 680$ kg·m/s
  6. Find ratio: $\frac{p_1}{p_2} = \frac{765}{680} = \frac{9}{8}$, so $x = 9$
