A parallel plate air capacitor has a capacitance C. When it is half filled as show in figure with a dielectric constant $K=5$, the percentage increase in the capacitance is _______. [Figure: A parallel plate capacitor with total separation $d$ between plates. The top half (thickness $d/2$) is filled with dielectric material $K=5$, and the bottom half (thickness $d/2$) is air.]

  1. (1) 33.34
  2. (2) 66.67
  3. (3) 200
  4. (4) 400
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (2)

Key idea: Capacitors in series with dielectric; Capacitance of parallel plate capacitor

  1. Original capacitance: $C = \frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d}$
  2. With half-filled dielectric, treat as two capacitors in series: Air gap ($d/2$) and dielectric gap ($d/2$)
  3. Air capacitor: $C_1 = \frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d/2} = 2C$; Dielectric capacitor: $C_2 = \frac{K\varepsilon_0 A}{d/2} = 10C$
  4. For series combination: $\frac{1}{C_{new}} = \frac{1}{2C} + \frac{1}{10C} = \frac{6}{10C}$, so $C_{new} = \frac{5C}{3}$
  5. Percentage increase $= \frac{C_{new} - C}{C} \times 100\% = \frac{5C/3 - C}{C} \times 100\% = \frac{2}{3} \times 100\% = 66.67\%$

A parallel plate air capacitor is connected to a battery. The plates are pulled apart at uniform speed $v$. If $x$ is the separation between the plates at any instant, then the time rate of change of electrostatic energy of the capacitor is proportional to $x^\alpha$, where $\alpha$ is ______.

  1. (1) $-2$
  2. (2) $1$
  3. (3) $-1$
  4. (4) $2$
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (1)

Key idea: Energy stored in a capacitor connected to a battery; Rate of change of energy with varying plate separation

  1. Write capacitance of parallel plate capacitor: $C = \frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{x}$
  2. Since capacitor is connected to battery (constant voltage $V$), energy is: $U = \frac{1}{2}CV^2 = \frac{\varepsilon_0 A V^2}{2x}$
  3. Find time rate of change: $\frac{dU}{dt} = \frac{\varepsilon_0 A V^2}{2} \cdot \frac{d}{dt}\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)$
  4. Apply chain rule: $\frac{dU}{dt} = \frac{\varepsilon_0 A V^2}{2} \cdot \left(-\frac{1}{x^2}\right) \cdot \frac{dx}{dt}$
  5. Substitute $\frac{dx}{dt} = v$: $\frac{dU}{dt} = -\frac{\varepsilon_0 A V^2 v}{2x^2}$
  6. Therefore $\frac{dU}{dt} \propto x^{-2}$, giving $\alpha = -2$

  2. (2) 7/2
  3. (3) 7/3
  4. (4) 5/2
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (3)

Key idea: Series and Parallel Combination of Capacitors

  1. Identify that $C_1$, $C_2$, and $C_3$ are connected in series between terminals $A$ and $B$
  2. For series capacitors: $\frac{1}{C_{series}} = \frac{1}{C_1} + \frac{1}{C_2} + \frac{1}{C_3} = \frac{1}{1} + \frac{1}{1} + \frac{1}{1} = 3$
  3. Therefore, $C_{series} = \frac{1}{3}$ μF
  4. Capacitor $C_4$ is connected in parallel with the series combination
  5. For parallel capacitors: $C_{eq} = C_{series} + C_4 = \frac{1}{3} + 2 = \frac{1}{3} + \frac{6}{3} = \frac{7}{3}$ μF

Given below are two statements: one is labelled as **Assertion A** and the other is labelled as **Reason R** **Assertion A:** In electrostatics, a conductor does not store any net charge inside. **Reason R:** Inside the capacitor (with no dielectric medium), the free charge carriers, if placed between the plates of capacitor, experience force and drift. Choose the *correct* answer from the options given below

  1. (1) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
  2. (2) Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
  3. (3) A is true but R is false
  4. (4) A is false but R is true
Show answer and solution

Answer: Option (2)

Key idea: Electrostatic properties of conductors and electric field in capacitors

  1. **Analyze Assertion A**: In electrostatics, conductors have zero electric field inside, so all excess charge resides on the surface. Statement A is **TRUE**.
  2. **Analyze Reason R**: Between capacitor plates, electric field $E = \sigma/\epsilon_0$ exists. Free charges placed here experience force $F = qE$ and drift. Statement R is **TRUE**.
  3. **Check if R explains A**: Reason R describes charges between capacitor plates (empty space), while A describes charge distribution in conductors.
  4. R does not explain why conductors store charge only on surface. The correct explanation involves internal field being zero and charge redistribution.
  5. **Conclusion**: Both statements are true, but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.

A sphere of capacitance 100 pF is charged to a potential of 100 V. Another identical uncharged metal sphere is brought in contact with the charged sphere, then the change in the total energy stored on these spheres, when they touch is $\alpha \times 10^{-7}$ J. The value of $\alpha$ is __________. (combined capacitance of spheres is 200 pF)

  1. (1) 5
  2. (2) $\frac{5}{2}$
  3. (3) $\frac{7}{2}$
  4. (4) $\frac{9}{2}$

Answer: Option (2)

Key idea: Energy loss in charge redistribution between capacitors

  1. Calculate initial charge: $Q_1 = C_1V_1 = 100 \times 10^{-12} \times 100 = 10^{-8}$ C
  2. Calculate initial energy: $U_i = \frac{1}{2}C_1V_1^2 = \frac{1}{2} \times 100 \times 10^{-12} \times 10^4 = 5 \times 10^{-7}$ J
  3. When spheres touch, charge distributes over combined capacitance: $V_f = \frac{Q_{total}}{C_{combined}} = \frac{10^{-8}}{200 \times 10^{-12}} = 50$ V
  4. Calculate final energy: $U_f = \frac{1}{2}C_{combined}V_f^2 = \frac{1}{2} \times 200 \times 10^{-12} \times 2500 = 2.5 \times 10^{-7}$ J
  5. Change in energy: $|\Delta U| = |U_f - U_i| = |2.5 - 5| \times 10^{-7} = 2.5 \times 10^{-7}$ J
  6. Therefore, $\alpha = 2.5 = \frac{5}{2}$
