Intermediate Value Property of Continuous Functions (JEE Advanced)

Not in the JEE Main syllabus, but it is in JEE Advanced. Study time: about 2 to 3 hours. Spend about 1 hour understanding the theorem statement and its proof idea, then 1 to 2 hours practicing problems where you identify intervals and apply IVT to prove existence of roots..

Direct answer

The Intermediate Value Property states that if a function f is continuous on a closed interval [a, b], then it takes every value between f(a) and f(b) at least once.

The Intermediate Value Property states that if a function f is continuous on a closed interval [a, b], then it takes every value between f(a) and f(b) at least once. In simple terms, a continuous function cannot jump from one value to another without passing through all values in between. This property is the mathematical reason why you can guarantee that certain equations have solutions in a given interval.

What the JEE Advanced syllabus says

“intermediate value property of continuous functions”

Source: JEE Advanced 2026 Information Bulletin, Annexure-I. Closest JEE Main topic: Limits, continuity and differentiability.

JEE Main focuses on computing limits and checking continuity at points, but Advanced expects you to use continuity as a tool to prove existence of roots and solutions. You need to go beyond calculation and apply the Intermediate Value Theorem to argue why solutions must exist.

Key ideas

What you must understand

  • If f is continuous on [a, b] and f(a) and f(b) have opposite signs, then f(x) = 0 has at least one root in (a, b)
  • The theorem guarantees existence of a root but does not tell you how many roots exist or where exactly they are
  • You can use IVT to prove that polynomials of odd degree always have at least one real root
  • IVT applies only to continuous functions on closed intervals, so always verify continuity first
  • A common application is showing that two continuous functions g and h intersect by applying IVT to f(x) = g(x) − h(x)
  • The property fails for discontinuous functions, for example f(x) = 1/x on [−1, 1] skips zero even though f(−1) < 0 and f(1) > 0
Formulas

Formulas and key facts

  • If f is continuous on [a, b] and k is between f(a) and f(b), then there exists c ∈ (a, b) such that f(c) = k
  • If f is continuous on [a, b] with f(a) · f(b) < 0, then there exists c ∈ (a, b) such that f(c) = 0
  • For odd degree polynomial p(x): lim(x→∞) p(x) and lim(x→−∞) p(x) have opposite signs, so p has at least one real root
  • To show g(x) = h(x) has a solution, apply IVT to f(x) = g(x) − h(x)
  • Continuous image of a closed interval [a, b] is a closed interval [m, M] where m and M are the minimum and maximum values
Avoid

Common mistakes

  • Applying IVT to a function that is not continuous on the entire interval, for example using it on tan(x) over an interval containing π/2
  • Concluding that there is exactly one root when IVT only guarantees at least one root exists
  • Forgetting to check that the target value k actually lies between f(a) and f(b) before applying the theorem
  • Using open intervals (a, b) instead of closed intervals [a, b] when stating the hypothesis for IVT
Worked example

A JEE Advanced-level example

Question. Prove that the equation x⁵ − 3x − 1 = 0 has at least one root in the interval (1, 2).

Show solution
  1. Define f(x) = x⁵ − 3x − 1. This is a polynomial, so it is continuous everywhere, including on [1, 2].
  2. Calculate f(1) = 1⁵ − 3(1) − 1 = 1 − 3 − 1 = −3.
  3. Calculate f(2) = 2⁵ − 3(2) − 1 = 32 − 6 − 1 = 25.
  4. Since f(1) = −3 < 0 and f(2) = 25 > 0, the function changes sign on [1, 2].
  5. By the Intermediate Value Theorem, there exists at least one c ∈ (1, 2) such that f(c) = 0.

Answer: The equation x⁵ − 3x − 1 = 0 has at least one root in the interval (1, 2).

Solved twice independently; both solutions agree.
