Is JEE 2027 Going to Be Tough?

Nobody knows the difficulty of a paper before it is written. Here is what we do know, and why it matters less than you think.

Last updated: 26 October 2026

Direct answer

No one can predict JEE 2027 difficulty. What is fixed: 75 compulsory questions, +4/−1 marking on all of them, and percentile scoring.

Since your result is a percentile within your shift, a hard paper is hard for everyone in it. What decides your result is your accuracy and time management, not the paper's difficulty.

Known facts

What the 2027 pattern tells us

  • 75 questions, all compulsory: 20 MCQs and 5 numerical questions in each subject. There is no choice in Section B.
  • Negative marking (−1) applies to both MCQs and numerical questions, as stated in the 2027 bulletin.
  • Multiple shifts are normalised into NTA percentile scores, so a tough shift does not lower your percentile by itself.
Recent trend

What recent papers looked like

In recent sessions, students often reported that Physics and Chemistry felt manageable while Maths was long and calculation-heavy in several shifts. Some shifts were clearly harder than others, which normalisation is designed to balance. Expect at least one subject to feel long, and plan your section order for it.

What to do

How to prepare for any difficulty level

  • Take full mocks at your actual shift time, 9 AM or 3 PM.
  • Practise a two-round strategy: first answer what you are sure of, then return to the rest.
  • Track accuracy, not just score. Below about 80% accuracy, negative marks start costing you a lot.
  • Use mock analysis to find the chapters that leak marks.
Example

Why difficulty matters less than you think

Suppose your shift is hard and you score 140, while a friend in an easier shift scores 160. You might both end up near the same percentile, because percentiles are worked out inside each shift. What would really hurt you is panicking in the first 30 minutes and making careless mistakes.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is JEE Main 2027 going to be tougher than 2026?

No one knows before the exam. The pattern is the same: 75 compulsory questions with +4/−1 marking. Difficulty varies by shift and is balanced by normalisation.

Is there negative marking for numerical questions in JEE Main 2027?

Yes. The 2027 bulletin states negative marking for incorrect answers in both Section A and Section B.

Which subject is the hardest in JEE Main?

It varies by shift. In many recent shifts, students found Maths the longest. Practise full mocks to find your own weak section.

Does a tough shift reduce my percentile?

Not by itself. Percentiles are calculated within each shift, so if everyone finds it hard, the percentile for the same marks is higher.
