Your JoSAA seat is SAFE

"Even after paying the Participation-cum-Acceptance Fee (PAF) for a seat in JoSAA, it will be automatically cancelled WHEN a seat is allocated in CSAB." — This means: if nothing is allotted in CSAB, your old JoSAA seat stays. Your JoSAA seat is intact. Here's what to do:
- Report to your allotted institute as per the JoSAA reporting schedule. Don't delay beyond the deadline or you'll lose your seat.
- Check CSAB Supernumerary Round — this starts after CSAB special rounds and is strictly for SC/ST/OBC-NCL seats in Union Territory quota. Very limited seats, but worth checking if eligible.
- If you're unhappy with your branch, plan for branch change via first-year CGPA (most NITs/IIITs allow this at 8.5+/10 CGPA). Many students successfully switch to CSE/ECE through this route.
- Consider dual degree or minor specializations offered by your institute — many NITs allow CSE minors even for non-CS branches.

Option B: You had NO seat from JoSAA + nothing from CSAB
You're truly unallotted. Here are your options, in priority order:
- State Counselling — MHT-CET CAP rounds, KCET, WBJEE, REAP, UPSEE/AKTU and more. Most are still open in August. See deadline table below ↓
- COMEDK UGET 2026 — Karnataka private + deemed universities. Separate counselling process. Many Bangalore colleges with strong placements participate.
- Direct admission universities — VIT, Manipal, SRM, Thapar, BITS Mesra all have separate application processes still accepting students.
- DASA 2026 — For NRI/PIO/OCI candidates. Different process, different quota. Check if you qualify.

Many private colleges accept JEE Main score for merit-based scholarships. Good options include:

Pro tip: Don't judge a college by one metric. Check median package (not highest), coding culture, alumni network, and total 4-year cost before deciding. A college with ₹20 LPA highest package but ₹4 LPA median is not a good deal.

Most state counselling processes run through August–September. If you have domicile eligibility, these can give you excellent college options at significantly lower fees than private institutions. The key advantage: many state colleges have placement records comparable to or better than mid-tier private colleges, at 1/10th the fee.

CSAB Fee Refund Rules — What You Need to Know
Many students are confused about whether they get their CSAB SREF back if they don't get a seat. Here are the rules:
- CSAB SREF is non-refundable. Even if you don't get a seat, the ₹40,000 (General/OBC/EWS) or ₹19,000 (SC/ST) is not returned.
- JoSAA SAF adjustment: If you already paid JoSAA SAF, that amount is adjusted against CSAB SREF. You only pay the balance.
- If you get a CSAB seat and report: Your CSAB SREF is adjusted against the institute fees.
- If you get a CSAB seat but don't report: You lose both the CSAB SREF and your original JoSAA seat (because it was cancelled when CSAB allotted you).
Should You Take a Drop Year?

If your JEE Main rank is above 5 lakh, and you genuinely want an NIT or IIT, the question becomes: prepare seriously for one year vs. join a college you'll regret for four years.
Data point: Roughly 50% of JEE Advanced qualifiers every year are droppers. A focused drop year with a structured system works. A drop year without a new strategy usually repeats the same result.
Key consideration: If you scored above 85 percentile in JEE Main 2026, you have demonstrated that you understand the material. A drop year can help you push from 85th to 99th percentile. If you scored below 70 percentile, the gap is larger and a drop year is riskier.
