FREEZE Explained
Definition:
You are HAPPY with your current allotment. You want to LOCK it.
What happens:
No further upgrades. Your seat is confirmed for this institute. You are out of all subsequent JoSAA rounds.
When to use:
When your allotted seat IS your first choice, or when you don't want to risk losing a good seat chasing something better.
Example:
You wanted NIT Trichy ECE (your choice #1). You got NIT Trichy ECE. Select FREEZE. Done. No more rounds for you.
Risk: If you Freeze and a better seat opens up in a later round, you CANNOT take it. You're locked.
FLOAT Explained
Definition:
You got a seat, but you'd prefer something higher on your list. You want the system to check if any higher-preference choice is now available.
What happens:
System tries to upgrade you to a higher-preference choice in the next round. If it can upgrade you, your current seat is RELEASED and you get the new one. If it CANNOT upgrade you, you keep your current seat (you don't lose it).
When to use:
When your allotted seat is NOT your top choice and you want to try for better. This is the default smart choice for most students.
Example:
You wanted NIT Trichy CSE (#1 choice). You got NIT Raipur CSE (#5 choice). Select FLOAT. Next round: if NIT Trichy CSE seat opens up → you get it, lose NIT Raipur. If NIT Trichy CSE doesn't open → you keep NIT Raipur automatically.
Risk: None. If no upgrade happens, you keep current seat. This is the safest option.
SLIDE Explained
Definition:
You got a seat. You want to try for a DIFFERENT BRANCH at the SAME INSTITUTE.
What happens:
System only considers choices at your CURRENT allotted institute. It will not try to move you to a different college, only a different branch at the same college.
When to use:
When you like the COLLEGE but not the BRANCH you got. You want to slide from Branch B to Branch A at the same NIT.
Example:
You got NIT Trichy Mechanical. You ALSO want NIT Trichy CSE and NIT Trichy ECE (listed higher in your choices). Select SLIDE. If NIT Trichy CSE or ECE opens → you move to that branch at NIT Trichy. You WON'T be moved to NIT Warangal CSE even if it's higher on your list.
Risk: If you slide to a better branch, your old branch is released. But you stay at the same college.

Common Mistakes Students Make
Selecting FREEZE when they meant FLOAT
Students are scared of "losing" their seat. But Float doesn't make you lose it. Float only moves you IF something better opens. If nothing opens, you keep current seat. Freeze is permanent — you can't change your mind later.
Selecting SLIDE when they mean FLOAT
If you want a completely different college, Slide won't help you. Slide only checks the same college. Use Float if you want to try for a different college.
Freezing in Round 1 thinking they can Float in Round 2
Once you Freeze, you're out of subsequent upgrade rounds. You cannot change from Freeze to Float later. Many students regret this when a better seat opens in Round 2 or 3.
